1960 was a big year for foreign acts in São Paulo... this is a Christmas time ad by TV Record displaying their main foreign attractions for the year.

Even though Japanese baritone Hiroshi Maki was not included as a '1960 foreign attraction' in the 1963 pamphlet TV Record sent their fans and associates, Hiroshi was the very first 1960 foreign attraction. He performed at Teatro Record nightly on the 15, 16 and 17 January 1960 in sold-out recitals due to the sheer number of Japanese immigrants and their off-spring who lived in S.Paulo then.

15 January 1960 - Japanese singer Hiroshi Maki is shown at Teatro Record with 'O Japão em São Paulo' (Japan in S.Paulo) a revue produced with local talents like rock'n'roller Takashi Ikeda and others.

Takashi Ikeda was a Japanese or a Nissei (ethnic Japanese born and raised in Brazil) young man who did a rock'n'roll act at Black Jack Boite, a Japanese night club on Avenida Ceci, 1776 in the Southern part of the city. As one can see the crowd who performed at the night club put on a musical revue to support the real Japanese attraction - Hiroshi Maki - while he did his thing at Teatro Record.

This is what OESP columnist wrote about Hiroshi Maki's presentation at Channel 7, TV Record:

It was on Friday night that Channel 7 broadcast at 22:00 the Hiroshi Maki recital, named the 'greatest melodic singer in Japan'. We had only one recital of international folk music performed by a singer of Japanese nationality.

The show began with 'Arirá', a Korean folk song whose chorus was sung in Portuguese so that viewers knew what it was about. Hiroshi sang the bolero ¡®Quien sabe?(´©°¡ ¾Ë¾Æ?)¡¯, 'At the beautiful sound of the flute', also of Korean folklore. He took a break for the artist to change his clothes, changing the sumptuous Japanese costume with which he sang the 1st. Partly, for a handsome cut tuxedo, he sang 'No One Loves Me'. a mambo-rhythm Japanese song and the recital ended with 'Story of a Love' in tango, with the slurred phrasing that Lucho Gatica popularized.

Too bad the 1st. international attraction presented by the United Broadcasters had been this. Undoubtedly, Hiroshi Maki has a beautiful baritone voice, reveals being comfortable on stage and sings boleros, tangos, sambas, mambos better than Nat King Cole and even many South American artists. But we, and we believe most viewers, would rather see and hear a recital of Japanese music.

The rest of Japan in S. Paulo magazine, of which Hiroshi is the highlight, was not featured. Cesar Medeiros was a good MC and, in the direction of TV, A.A. de Carvalho was attentive to the show
